Cherry Grove became in the 1940s a secure LGBTQ+ haven. Its historic Community House and theater still provide room for open-arts and open-events venues. The "Invasion of the Pines," started in 1976, is still an active drag-queen celebration. Over the years, the community came to be known for being open to many who were fleeing anti-gay persecution while becoming an artistic beachside community.

Located at the end of Rehoboth's boardwalk opposite Queen Street, Poodle Beach is the officially designated gay beach in the town. It has a welcoming, open summer vibe ideal for sunbathing and socializing. Rehoboth was developed into an LGBTQ+ oasis by local activism and cultural development.
